Sculptural & Unconventional Book Forms - with e bond
This workshop is for the adventurous book artist interested in exploring book forms that are less traditional and more sculptural in nature. Because each of these bindings work with single sheets of paper — as opposed to folded stacks — these structures are surprisingly simple to create & allow for many kinds of content to be used. In the workshop you'll learn three different bindings by making mockups using blank or already decorated papers. (Feel free to bring materials to use if you have a great idea already brewing.) This is a ‘form’ class, meaning we will concentrate mostly on learning how to craft these three structures, as opposed to focusing on what the content of the form will contain. You’ll leave with three samples plus the knowledge to be able to take the structure expand upon it in your own practice in the future. We’ll begin by learning two variations of a flag book designed by Hedi Kyle. Then move on to the dragon scale binding, a traditional Chinese binding which dates as far back as the Tang Dynasty. Finally, we’ll experiment with the Turkish map fold which also allows for so many fun sculptural applications. Open to absolute beginners, practicing artists, designers, makers & anyone who likes books…
Paper Art: Paper Potluck - with Reina Takahashi
Learn paper art techniques while making paper food!
In this workshop, you will learn basic paper art techniques. Through live demos, we’ll cover methods for hand cutting, curving, creasing, and gluing while making a plate of paper rigatoni together (!). We’ll combine these methods to create textures and explore how to translate a food subject into paper form. There will be studio time for you to experiment and create a paper food piece of your own. By the end of class, you will have contributed to a paper potluck, created by the class! Each person will walk away with a piece of their own creation.
Join Reina for a fun, relaxed weekend activity while enjoying a rewarding tactile experience! This workshop is open to all levels, but participants should be comfortable with learning to use an Xacto knife.
